DESCRIPTION

From the board of Ed Burnett, in association with Nigel Irens and built by the Elephant Boatyard in 1998 ZINNIA may owe her easy lines not a little to the influence of West Country pilot boats with maybe just a hint of Laurent Giles and Harrison Butler. Whatever the influences, the designers and ZINNIA’s extremely knowledgeable owners have created a 30 foot gaff cutter for offshore and coastal sailing (but with an Atlantic circuit already under her belt) as sure footed and well mannered as her looks imply. Nonetheless she has turn of speed enough to have won her trophies at gaffer events with embarrassing ease.

ZINNIA has a consistency of build, style and finish carried through the boat from the all bronze custom deck fittings to her interior, displaying her wonderful wooden construction to great effect.

Given the high quality of her build, her condition is hard to fault and there can be no doubt her next owner will acquire a very special yacht indeed.

ZINNIA was originally laid out unashamedly for two people, with completely open plan accommodation. Three years ago the owners reconfigured the accommodation to a more conventional arrangement, which includes a saloon and separate forecastle, which incorporates the head. At the same time, the cockpit was enlarged to provide more space and protection.

Accommodation and Domestic Equipment

The layout takes full advantage of the beautiful wooden shell construction, imbuing an ambience reminiscent of yachts a hundred years her senior. While the atmosphere may be warm it is never too hot, thanks to the deliberately thick deck and coach roof construction, specifically designed to prevent the penetration of tropical heat.

Rig Spars and Sails

While ZINNIA’s design may appear timeless, the use of modern materials in her construction allowed her designers to specify a height of mast, balanced with low slung ballast to give a stiffness and the power to hoist a vast amount of canvas; way more than could ever have been achieved with pitch pine on oak and heavy spars.
