OWNERS COMMENTS
Owners Notes on Tankard 19 â Elsie
Elsie was purchased as a project boat in Feb 2009 and totally restored by May 13 when she was relaunched at
Tollesbury. The boat has been at Tollesbury since 2013 and was lifted out for Winter 2014/15 and 2015/16.
The Tankard 19 was designed by Oliver J Lee, originally built in wood by Brian Tankard in Essex and then in
fibreglass in Devon. I understand it is the same as the NOMAD class. The original boats did not have a
bowsprit, I suspect this was added later to improve the handling.
The restoration involved removing all the internal berths and cabinets and refitting in marine ply. The bilges
were flowcoated and a new engine (Yanmar 1GM10, fuel tank, sterngear with a Tidesmarine shaft seal fitted
and a 3 bladed prop. A sliding hatch was fitted and a compression post fitted. The mast tabernacle is new as is the mast and the
rigging. The backstay is adjustable. The sails supplied with the boat were possibly 20 years old and were
serviced by Crusader and modified for the new mast. The original boom was boom roller reefing and this was
replaced with slab reefing. A new main and genoa were purchased fro Crusader at this time. Plastimo
headsail reefing was fitted.
The deck and hull were repainted in two pack and a new iroko rubbing strake fitted. The deck was covered
with Permateek â a Synthetic teak material. All external timber (except bowsprit) was replaced and windows
that had been fitted into the side of the hull filled using West Epoxy materials and new windows fitted in the
coach roof. The inside was lined above the waterline before being covered. More ventilation and a small deck
hatch was fitted.
A Garmin NMEA2000 installation with masthead sender and thru hull speed and echosounder with two GMI10
displays installed, one internally the other in the cockpit. A VHF radio with a dedicated GPS receiver has been
installed. Two batteries (OPTIMA) are fitted with a Split charge relay and there is a small 10W Solar panel.
There is one automatic bilge pump at the aft end of the bilge and another at the forward end. There is a
manual pump in the cockpit. The limber holes are fitted with a chain.
