DESCRIPTION

Madiba is a special yacht possessing a rare and distinguished pedigree. She was designed by Philip L Rhodes, one of the best known American boat designers of the 20th century and built at the world famous Abeking and Rasmussen shipyard in northern Germany.

Philip Rhodes’ career, which spanned more than 50 years, was crowned when his design, the racing yacht Weatherly, successfully defended the 1962 Americas Cup.

Designed specifically for an American banker from Nantucket Island, Madiba was based on the successful cutting edge Philip Rhodes design for the 72 foot super yacht Barlovento II. Madiba’s original designs are archived in the Mystic Seaport maritime museum in Mystic Seaport, Connecticut. Copies are also retained on board the yacht.

Madiba was launched in 1962 at the Abeking and Rasmussen shipyard in northern Germany. Built using the toughest German steel, with Canadian spruce wooden masts, teak decks and Mahogany interiors, Madiba's 57 ft (17.5m) offers 2 double guest cabins with en-suites,and a single berth, in addition to a separate cabin for the skipper.

She is reported to have had six Owners. The previous two owners to the seller was an American gentleman from California who owned her for 14 years and sailed her extensively up and down the Californian coast, followed by an English gentleman who owned her for more than 14 years, enjoying discovering the waters of South East Asia. It was reported that the vessel has circumnavigated three times and was previously named "Skywave Star".

Her current owners have spared no expense in maintaining her in a condition that Philip Rhodes would be proud to carry his name.

Given her pedigree and grace, Madiba is the epitome of the classic ketch of yesteryear. The Kennedys sailed the waters of Nantucket in equal style. She comes from the era of elegance and luxury, of writing desks and cigars, of Hemingway and Marilyn Munroe.

The generous aft deck beckons one down for sunset cocktails and star lit dinners, while the main cockpit for very social breakfasts and lunches. Sun-bathing decks on the main cabin top and on the forward deck. Generous awnings keep the heat factor low during the day, allowing gentle breezes to tunnel through.

Madiba is a unique classic sailing yacht that has benefited from careful owners which will enable her to keep on sailing for generations to come. For a complete specification or to make an appointment to view please contact Lee Marine today.
