Deglet Nour
Deglet Nour was built in 1948 by Wilson at Sunbury on Thames as a Swan Class cruiser and is a fine example of post-war craftsmanship. Construction is of 3/4" mahogany on oak frames. An initial major restoration programme took place in the late eighties when she was rebuilt by retired marine engineer Frank Robinson. At that time a new 3 cylinder Perkins diesel engine was fitted with a new gearbox and hydraulic steering. The craft is fitted with an electric fridge, gas cooker, shower unit and toilet. There is oil fired central heating (not tested recently) and a 12 volt electrical circuit with mains shore power and automatic battery charging while the boat also has a low voltage lighting system. Domestic water is heated by the engine or by an immersion heater from the mains circuit. Many of the fittings are original. More recently a new transom was fitted with appropriate new planking to maintain structural integrity and in 2015/16 the boat had a thorough inspection with some new replacement planking. Deglet Nour has been well maintained in recent years both mechanically and structurally with the hull having been repainted and all the external varnish redone by Dennetts of Laleham Reach. This is a comfortable and spacious boat ideally suited for weekend cruising, entertaining friends or longer holidays afloat. A previous owner who had her for several decades was a regular attendee at the Thames Traditional Boat Rally (now renamed Thames Traditional Boat Festival) for many years and there is a complete dossier on the history of the craft. In 1952 Motor Boat and Yachting described this 30ft motor cruiser as a "sensible seaworthy craft". Indeed I see no reason why this boat would not be a good base for cruising on the East Coast as well as on the Thames. She was designed to go to sea as witnessed by MBY in 1952. Deglet Nour offers spacious accommodation in the forward cabin for two and a large saloon cum galley which converts into a double. Cockpit and cabin cushions are attractive and there is a full length canvas winter cover. Currently available for viewing afloat on the mid Thames by appointment with an excellent-optional mooring at Harleyford Marina by separate arrangement.
