ANOTHER $20,000 Price Reduction!
Brand New 3.2 kW Generator!
This Boat has our DNA! Here at the Multihull Company we were the global distributors and agents for Dolphin Catamarans and over the course of years sold over 24 of these catamarans. When the Global Financial Crisis hit we decided to shut down the shipyard in Brazil. The tooling for the boats remained there and her chief builder, Philippe Pouvreau, was asked to build a few Dolphins for Brazilians using those tools. FAU is one of these "custom Dolphins." While she is not identical and has some different looks and features, she is the same great sailing boat, and from talking with Philippe recently he assures me she is a fine boat that he built with pride. I am bilingual English-Portuguese and have been in touch with her owner and Philippe, and therefore can answer any questions you might have on this very special listing at a superb price. Dolphins have a proven yacht design, with over fifty 46 foot models built, and more than a few safe circumnavigations. For anyone looking to get a real sailing catamaran, that is a comfortable live-aboard as well, FAU has to be at the top of the list.
Looking for a custom built boat by a master?
Two similar models, baptized "OCEMA 42" were built by Master Builder Philippe Pouvreau at the Dolphin plant in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.
Builder of the Dolphin 460 vinyl-ester catamarans as well, two customers wished for a smaller version at 42 ft, and so Philippe hand built these with strip plank technology, enveloped with triaxial fiberglass cloth and epoxy.
So what is Strip Plank Technology in the 21st Century?
Cedar strip planking is much stronger and more resistant to impact than fiberglass. Vinyl-ester is a resin used to harden fiberglass, like polyester resin, so same as fiberglass. Vinyl-ester resin is simply more water resistant than polyester resin. Epoxy resin is the most water resistant of all resins. So the combination of cedar strip planking and epoxy is formidable.
And strip planking is lighter than fiberglass. It just needs to be protected well so it does not rot in time and therefore the quality of the construction is what matters. Most strip-planked boats are built by amateurs, thus the concern from buyers, as many have rotted in time. However, Philippe Pouvreau is a Master Builder.
In the case of the OCEMA's, Philippe used a Brazilian wood called "Louro Vermelho". It's a tropical fibrous wood, which is light, much stronger and doesn't rot like Red Cedar. This is used on the hull bottoms as high as 6 inches above the waterline. It is then covered with 2 layers of resin impregnated triaxial cloth (45/45/0) of 0.2765 lbs/ft2.
The upper hull and decks are made of 12mm (1/2”) marine plywood and crossbeams of Louro Vermelho as well. Exterior lamination of the entire boat is made with 800 g/m2 (0.1639 lb/ft2) biaxial fiberglass. Paint is PU/polyester.
The Dolphin Catamaran plan was a project developed by legendary Phillip Berman and Philippe Pouvreau in Salvador, Brazil. As of the late 2000's his partner Philippe Pouvreau took on the boatyard making custom Dolphins, 42 and 46.
