Introduction and General Background

CHALIVENTURES III, a Tashiba 40, was produced in 1987 by the world-famous Ta Shing Yacht yard in Taiwan. She is a strong, canoe-stern, full-keel, heavy-displacement offshore cutter, with a cutaway forefoot. A superb ocean voyager, fast, safe, and strongly built, she was designed for long distance offshore cruising by Robert Perry, a renowned naval architect. Perry produced a series of famous offshore designs that helped to popularize world cruising in the 1970s and 1980s.

CHALIVENTURES III is designed from the ground up as a true cutter. She has a surprising turn of speed in light as well as heavy winds. She is easy to balance and reef; light on the helm at all points of sail; and she points well. She has a safe and comfortable motion when the wind and waves kick up. Many Tashiba/Baba/Panda 40s have circumnavigated the globe, and at least one Tashiba 40 made a single-handed passage around Cape Horn safely and in extreme weather conditions.

The deck layout of CHALIVENTURES III is designed for crew safety, with wide side decks, a well protected, well drained cockpit, oversized self-tailing winches, lots of hand holds, double lifelines and multiple attach points for jacklines and/or safety harnesses.

Perry describes the Tashiba 40 design as "one of his all-time favorite cruising designs." (Clarification: because of a legal marketing dispute, this design was marketed under three brand names: first as a Baba 40, then as a Panda 40, and finally as the Tashiba 40. Nevertheless, all three "brand names" are identical designs, made in the same Ta Shing shipyard, with the only differences being the mix of custom factory upgrades to meet individual buyer preferences.)

The current owners (husband and wife) lived aboard for 12 years, made several voyages up and down the east coast, between Maine, Florida, and the Bahamas, before sailing across the Atlantic in 2005. They cruised the Mediterranean Sea for 10 years. She comes equipped with spare parts and many incidental extras/spares that make the cruising life easier and more comfortable. She is being sold reluctantly, because the owners have decided for age-related reasons that it is time to swallow the anchor and permanently live ashore near grandchildren.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Entering the companionway from a well-protected cockpit, you will find the Key-Hole galley to port. To starboard is an enclosed stateroom with double quarter berth and dressing area with mirrored cupboard, hanging locker and storage drawers.

Forward of the aft stateroom on the starboard side is an aft-facing nav station. Under the nav station is an enclosed Spectra watermaker. A settee is forward of the nav station on starboard that can serve as a passage bunk in heavy weather. Across on port side is a large dinette with seating for six-plus around a table with a beautiful wood-grain design. Forward of the dinette on port is the entrance to the large head with sink/vanity and separate shower with seat. Plumbing has been modified for ease of flow and maintenance. On entering the forward stateroom you will find another hanging locker to starboard with dressing seat and drawer storage and shelf space. The roomy double V-berth has storage on both sides and storage underneath. Beautiful teak runs throughout the interior of this fine well-equipped vessel. 4 Deck prisms add natural light down below and 15 opening ports and 2 deck hatches (1 butterfly hatch in main salon) provide excellent ventilation and light.

MANUFACTURER'S COMMENTS

The Tashiba 40's hull is made of hand-laminated, one-piece, heavy-duty fiberglass with optional polyurethane insulation for liveaboard ability. Vinylester resins are used on the exterior for maximum osmotic protection as well as 951 Armorcote gelcoat, formulated to provide outstanding weather resistance. A series of longitudinal and transverse stringers are used to provide maximum hull support. Three coats epoxy with three coats Micron CSC anti-fouling bottom paint. There is a one-piece internal iron cast ballast, bedded with fiberglass and polyester resin, glassed over to reinforce the hull section. The Tashiba 40 also includes a hand-laminated FRP house and deck with end grain balsa sandwich construction. Where deck hardware is through-bolted, it is reinforced with encapsulated marine grade plywood using stainless steel backing plates. The standard model is cutter-rigged and features a varnished teak and spruce cabin sole, a teak interior finished with satin varnish, a double sink in a wrap-around galley, hot and cold pressure water with a shower and two separate double staterooms. Pedestal steering is standard. The pilothouse model provides a warm, secure inside steering station. The substantial windows are made from 10-mm tempered glass with optional storm shutters available. There are two double staterooms, plus a single quarterberth to starboard.
