Patent Information
In April 2001, the President of North Pacific Marine, Inc., Albert Lindstrom, in collaboration with his partner, John R. Kirkham, were awarded U.S. patent #6,216,622 for a Boat Hull with Center V-Hull and Sponsons.
This patent was the culmination of years of design work and pertains to an advanced hull structure which improves the handling characteristics of a V-bottom hull by combining V-bottom characteristics with those of a flat bottom planing hull. The hull design is further enhanced by the speed and acceleration characteristics of a tunnel hull boat by introducing substantially flat progressive lift surfaces with multiple tunnels, and multiple reverse dead-rise hydro chines, providing surfaces upon which the hull predominantly rides at higher speeds while providing lower speed running surfaces for mid-speed optimal performance.
Their patent also allows that these advanced features may be further combined with forced and natural air movement along the hull-water interface with stepped surfaces and other air induction techniques to provide added lift and control at low and high speeds.
Significance of the Design
Tunnel hull boats are designed to trap air underneath the boat hull as the boat moves through water, thereby compressing the air and lifting the boat above the waterline defined by the boat's natural buoyancy. This reduced drag makes tunnel hull boats very fast. However, traditional tunnel hull boats are unstable in hard maneuvering. This type of performance/tunnel-hull hybrid design is feasible for transporting heavy loads at very high speeds while maintaining stability during turning and critical maneuvers.
The air injected into the hull tunnels of a patented truncated trimaran hull design increases the already substantial load carrying capacity and maneuvering of this high transport hull design. The excellent performance and unique handling characteristics of this hull design make the boats equipped with these features desirable for use as pleasure craft, commercial work boats, high-speed ocean-going racers, as well as military and humanitarian activities.
