Major Tom is a sizzling fajita sort of a catamaran, designed by Australian Jeff Shionning, professionally built in South Africa with a team of ex Gunboat, Chris White and Southern Wind staff, and customized to be the most comfortable performance voyager the builder (himself a catamaran voyager) could fabricate. She is for the catamaran sailor that wants to sail faster than the wind, even in the lightest of breezes, anywhere in the world. During her sea trials she exceeded 25 knots with ease, without breaking a sweat. Charter barge she is most certainly not.

She is called the GF 51 and is brand new. She was built on speculation by her professional builder. She can be modified in certain areas or ways for the serious buyer, although, if you see her pictures, she has a very intelligently set up interior for such a high performance catamaran. I cannot imagine anything on the market today that could be much faster, other than some empty sliver ocean racing catamaran.

I was able to visit the shipyard while she was under build in South Africa, as the builder is a former client of ours and very experienced catamaran voyager. She is all foam core, carbon reinforced, epoxy, with foam sandwich furniture. Every effort was made to keep her light and fast and only the finest gear was chosen for her outfit.
