Pricing Comments And Ownership History

Price reduced by £10,000 in November 2020 to take into account the British owners have not been able to go to Greece and use her this year for Covid reasons.

A March 2021 survey has been commissioned and available on request. Yacht is ashore. The price is fixed at £74,950 to cover all that is mentioned in the report.

She has been priced at this levelNOT due to any structural or mechanical issues to our or the owner’s knowledge (we always recommend a structural survey on purchase) but to take account of the cosmetics below.  Mainly the saloon – whereby the upholstery could benefit from renewal, likewise the galley worksurfaces and there are old marks in some of the joinery.  If the owners had been able to be out on board this year they would have been on top of all the standard expected little jobs/maintenance required on any yacht.

The Moody 44's are highly respected yachts this one is no exception, she mainly requires TLC in a new ownership.

Owners cruising report (January 2021).

We bought her in 2012, the previous owner had her for fifteen years in Croatia and had her brought back to UK to be sold by Berthon. We paid 95, 000 pounds and immediately spent another 15,000 on her. We bought her to do a circumnavigation.

In the end we did a “U” turn at the Panama Canal (pirates and poorly mothers). Instead, we spent five years on the east coast of the American continent. South as far as Guyana and North to Nova Scotia. Four years in the Caribbean, one in the US and even a month in The Hudson just off Manhattan 15 minutes from Time square and Central Park. She was a perfect choice for this, comfortable reliable and safe.

We had a few scary moments but she never let us down. Three years ago, we brought her back to The Ionian where she was just as much at home . We went down to Crete through the Agean and back up on the west side of The Penopolese. She was the perfect size at 44 not too big to handle with plenty of space with the large aft cabin with two access points. The Berthon broker that sold her to us described her as having “Tardis  like qualities”. She has never let us down.

Here is my honest appraisal:(But we have not been able to return to her since late 2019)

Hull:  See survey

Gel coat: See survey

Top deck: See survey

Rigging etc.: All very good, we had her re-rigged when we bought her.

Electrics: All fine. Two big new solar panels just fitted a year ago in Preveza

Electronics : Mostly updated when we bought her 9 years ago. New Raymarine gear, chart plotter AIS and autohelm all working very well. We never replaced the old analogue radar and found that with the AIS that it was unnecessary.

Engine: One main job done six years ago which was to replace the valves . injectors and head gasket. Lots of little jobs e.g., the cooling system was acid washed out and the rubber gaskets have been replaced a couple of times. There are spares under the forward bunk e.g., a brand-new spare starter motor which I bought eight years ago for 150 pounds, head gasket etc. all never used.

These older diesel engines last forever. I have never felt that it needed replacement and still don’t. I did some research on it. It is a Volvo 22 D which is actual a Perkins. Perkins made them for Ford UK who put them in 2 litre diesel vans and cars like the Mondeo. In practical terms this means that spares are readily available. It was built for Vans running up and down motorways at 70 mph. It has done about1200 hrs and rarely exceeds 2200 rpm.

Internal Cosmetics:

Where I would spend next. This is the area; the saloon looks lived in and needs a minor refit. This is what I was considering and most of the work estimated as follows: New saloon sole 1200e. Reupholster saloon settees 6000e , repairs and re-varnishing saloon wood work 1800 e, new worksurfaces in galley 500. Total 9,500 . I was advised not to do this work but to reflect it in the price which is a bargain at 74,900. That way a new owner would have the opportunity to do it to their taste. It would not be essential and could be done over a few years. If we had done the mini refit , we would be asking £95,000.

We lived aboard for about 80 % of seven years and made lots of comfort live aboard improvement. A few examples: in the US we bought a really high-quality Force 10 stove with an oven that works properly. We installed a freezer. Lots of fitted fans.

Cruising History & Upgrades:

Three owners from new. Cruising in Spain for a few years, then 16 in Croatia back to UK.
The current owner purchased her in Lymington, UK through brokers Berthon in March 2012.

In this 7 year ownership she has cruised;
2012: Solent to France & Portugal
2013: Atlantic crossing Canary Isles to West Indies
2014: Bequia, Union Islands, Grenada, Tobago, BVI’s, Trinidad
2015: ABC Islands, Columbia, Jamaca, Bahamas, USA East Coast, New York
2016: Caribbean, Virgin Isles, East Coast USA, Canada, Nova Scotia
2017: Returned to Med, Majorca, Sardina, Sicily, Greece
2018: Greece, Ionian & Corfu

The condition or level of safety equipment on board is not to be negotiated on following survey. It is likely to be listed by most surveyors but is not structural or an integral working part of the vessel and is not to be used to further negotiate the price down after survey. We strongly suggest that for your own personal safety that when purchasing a yacht you provide new safety equipment rather than relying on second hand gear.

Should you become the new owner of this yacht then the responsibility to re-register or update official bodies for items such as EPIRB, VHF, MMSI or AIS becomes yours.
