DESCRIPTION

The Moody 422 is a renowned bluewater passagemaker built to Lloyds Hull Construction standards. FREIA's original owner successfully crossed the Atlantic twice for a decade of cruising in Europe and the Mediterranean before having her shipped to the Pacific Northwest. The second owner purchased FREIA in April 2008 and only used her lightly in local waters. The current owner (purchased 2011) also used her lightly while also improving her substantially.

Her spacious accommodations with three sleeping cabins provide a great layout for a cruising family. Uncluttered decks and comfortable center cockpit afford plenty of room for both work and relaxation. With her newer Yanmar engine she will be a reliable vessel and a great value for someone looking for a center cockpit cruiser capable of comfortable Pacific Northwest Cruising or crossing oceans.

Interior Accommodations

The interior accommodations aboard FREIA reflect the intent of Moody Yachts to provide a light, spacious and airy main salon for the shared activities of the ship while maintaining plenty of room to get away from the activity to read a book or take a rest when coming off watch. Ventilation from six opening hatches (five with Nicro ventilators), four opening ports, and two additional Nicro deck ventilators is excellent. Additional natural light is provided by large fixed windows on the cabin side. Reading, overhead and task lighting is well placed throughout the boat. Her new off-white headliner provides a nice counterpoint to the teak bulkheads, cabinetry and recently refinished teak and holly floors. Storage is abundant and easily accessed with tankage appropriate for her purpose.

Starting forward is the fore cabin with v-berth. Two comfortable berths can be infilled with an insert to convert this bed into a double. The cabin sides are lined with teak battens with lockers above to port and starboard. There is excellent ventilation and light from the large opening hatch with reading lights available for each berth. A hanging locker with cabinet below is aft and to port of the berth. The holding tank is under the forward portion of the berth with storage to port and holding tank pump out to starboard.

The forward head is aft and to starboard of the fore cabin. Accessed from both the fore cabin and the passageway forward, the head compartment has easy to clean surfaces. The molded vanity with integral sink has hot and cold pressure water and a telescoping faucet that also functions as the shower head. Storage is available in three lockers above and outboard of the vanity. There is a removable teak grate in the floor and shower curtain track overhead. A deck hatch provides ventilation and a florescent light illuminates the space. Opposite the head is a very large hanging locker.

The main salon of FREIA is definitely the heart of the boat’s interior accommodations with navigation, galley and settees in close proximity to one another with good visual access to the center cockpit above. The spacious layout is suitable for serious offshore cruising as well as gunkholing in protected waters or on the hook in a secluded cove. The U-shaped settee to starboard has an opposing straight settee to port with teak drop leaf dining table reaching both settees when expanded. Storage is easily accessible and includes large lockers above the port settee and lockers and open shelving above the starboard settee. Large bins are outboard the contoured cushions. Water tanks and some storage is available below the settee cushions.

The nav station with forward facing, top opening chart table is to starboard of the companionway. The chart table is large enough for Admiralty charts, and there is room for chart storage and navigation tools under the lifting table top. Electronics, electrical panels and cubbies are outboard the table. The radar is mounted overhead and swivels to allow viewing from cockpit or chart table. A flexible nav light is fitted forward, and there is an Alpenglow light on the ceiling. Tool storage is available under the upholstered navigator’s seat.

The U-shaped galley is to port of the companionway well suited for use in a boisterous seaway or when dockside. Plenty of counter space, fiddles to keep food contained and the stowage to accommodate stores, dishes, cutlery and pots and pans will make the cook happy both at sea and at anchor. The aft counter is over the top loading refrigerator/freezer boxes with bulkhead mounted shelf above; the three burner Force Ten stove is out board with pots and pan storage below and large cabinets with sliding Plexiglass doors above and outboard; and the two round stainless steel sinks with pressure hot and cold water as well as manual foot pumps face forward near the centerline of the boat. Drawers for cutlery and a large storage locker under the sink provide additional storage. Outboard of the sinks is a large in-counter locker. The trash bin is located in an inboard facing cabinet convenient to both the main salon and galley. A second Alpenglow light is above the galley space. Aft of the companionway stairs are large storage lockers accessible from the galley.

The passageway aft from the main salon includes a passagemaking cabin with two berths outboard. The berths are excellent sea berths and can be converted to a settee by dropping the top bunk. A cubbie is fitted at the foot of each bunk with additional storage outboard as well as below the lower bunk. The hull sides are accented with slated teak. An opening port in the cabin side provides ventilation. Opposite the berths is the engine room and a small locker with hooks for hanging clothes. The large engine room is accessed from three sides: along the passageway as well as through panels in the owner's stateroom and behind the companionway stairs.

Next aft is the owner’s stateroom with large, centerline fore and aft double berth. This comfortable space belies the fact that FREIA is only a 42’ vessel. With a berth than can be made up from either side, dressing settee, vanity with mirror, and plenty of easily accessed drawers and lockers, FREIA’s owners will have everything they need close at hand. Ventilation is provided through the opening hatch and opening ports in the cabin sides. A full length mirror is mounted on the bulkhead forward of the settee. The ensuite head includes a separate shower stall with bi-fold Plexiglas doors and teak grate, a vanity with molded sink, and Par head with Lectra San treatment system. Storage lockers are outboard the vanity and head. All surfaces are constructed of easy to clean materials.

Deck & Hull

Each Moody 422 yacht carries a Lloyds Hull Construction Certificate. The hull is constructed of glass reinforced plastic and is painted white with blue stripping. The cored deck is white with gray nonskid with the nonskid surfaces repainted in the fall of 2007. There is a half skeg providing a partially balanced rudder with good support and protection. A Scheel keel affords a nice balance of windward performance and shoal draft. The center cockpit has sail controls at hand, the decks are uncluttered and easy to work on, the unique sun bed on the aft deck is a great place to relax and the scoop transom is easily accessed from dinghy or dock. A stainless steel swim ladder folds down from the transom and is deployable from the water for safety.
