DESCRIPTION

Aquila has been owned by the same owner for 29 years and is only her second owner. They purchased her to enjoy with their kids as they were growing up, now it is just the two of them and they are looking to downsize.

History notes from the owner:

"With every older boat, there is good and there is bad. With this boat, it is mostly good. The hull and rudder are perfect, the deck is solid, and the engine is magnificent. I bought the boat in 1993 from the original owner. It had blisters and some deck delamination. So I took it immediately to Mark Lennox in Rock Hall, Md., who everyone told me was the guru of blister repair. He peeled the bottom and rebuilt it all in vinylester resin. He gave me a 10 yr warranty but smiled and said "it's jut a formality--- the boat will never have another blister". He was right. The bottom has been perfect all these years. I've always used good, high copper content ablative paint.

I waited on the deck repair until the end of the 1995 sailing season. That winter Lennox removed everything fastened to the deck, rebuilt the entire deck (re-cored a few areas), spray-painted everything (flawlessly), and re-installed all the hardware (adding larger winches, which have made a big difference.

Overview

Accommodations

Traditional interior layout for a center cockpit vessel of this size. Starting forward is the guest cabin with V-berth followed by the head to starboard and hanging locker to port. Next moving aft is the Main Salon. The layout here has been slightly customized. Where she originally had a fore and aft facing dinette on starboard, the owner has converted it to a straight settee that can pull out to create an addition double berth. He also created a custom bulkhead mounted teak table that folds down, meets with the mast and has a drop leaf for dining on both sides of the salon. When the table is attached to the bulkhead the whole salon feels very open and roomy. Settee to port with storage behind. Aft to port is a huge L-shaped navigation station. To starboard is the L-shaped galley that also leads to the engine compartment and the aft Master Stateroom.

The aft master stateroom is very accommodating with large V-berth (some owners have converted the berth to a double berth). Drawers under the berths, large hanging locker, and enclosed head with sink and shower combination.

Her interior is light and bright. The bulkheads are wood grain formica with teak trim throughout. Many people have painted the formica to give it the "Herreshoff" look. Perforated vinyl headliner looks good. The main and sleeping cabins are carpeted, teak and holly ply in the navigation area, galley and hallway to aft cabin. Teak lines the inside of the trunk cabin adding to the warmth below. All opening ports and multiple hatches lend to great ventilation throughout the vessel. There is indication that some of the ports have leaked, it would be time to re-bed or replace the plastic opening ports.
