DESCRIPTION

This 32 ft Cutter from the board of Norman Dallimore typifies her designer's work with her pretty sheer and graceful ends – SUSANNA is one of those boats that is so sweet on the eye it is difficult to pass comment and pick one element that makes her so special - perhaps it is this that has encouraged the last 2 ownerships to refine her structurally and cosmetically. Her current rig is now close to the original configuration again and boat is so unspoilt she seems to have an almost natural quality about her – without question this is a great example of a vintage yacht.

Historical and Owners Notes

Designed by Norman Dallimore is why she is so pretty and built by William King of Burnham on Crouch is why she’s structurally sound. SUSANNA has been fortunate to have always had owners fall for her charm and capability and consequently has had love and attention lavished on her throughout her 80 years. Some of her owners have been racing men, others more interested in cruising. SUSANNA is comfortable with either.
Reveille Farrell from Dungarvan, Southern Ireland and two others in 1957 sailed SUSANNA to Northern Spain as far as Vigo. In those days a passage across the Bay of Biscay and back was thought beyond the capacity of the average cruising yacht in a normal holiday period but this boat had no such qualms. On her return trip they were overtaken by a severe southwest gale and hoved to for 36 hours. Reveille wrote later that it would have been longer but they had run out of whiskey making the risks involved in heading into the Isles of Scilly a bit of a necessity.

SUSANNA also looked after her racing owners, notably John McConnell; repaying his investment and confidence in her by challenging the best including winning the ‘Irish Sea Race’ in 1964, first overall against stiff competition -Angus Primrose in GREEN HIGHLANDER and FABIUS skippered by Errol Bruce.

For 5 years she was American flagged before being bought by Alfred Abels who based her in Bristol and over 23 years cruised extensively in the western isles, Ireland, and Brittany often single handed well into his 70s.

Since the early 1990s she has been based along the south coast, Dartmouth and the Solent and now under the present ownership in Guernsey.

SUSANNA has looked after all her owners whether they raced or cruised. Whether fully crewed with family and dogs or single handed, her present owner does both and usually has a short cruise on his own across the Channel along the south coast and back to Guernsey in the early season. He says she is a joy, easy to sail and hasn’t given him any cause for concern over the last 6 years.

Restoration / Refit

In the previous ownership full surveys and recommendation of structural work was carried out including all new keel bolts, replacement of the garboard planks and all hood end fastenings, repairs to some cracked frames, all new rigging and chain plates and a new engine.

In the present very experienced ownership her rig has been altered and put back to near original with all new sails making her very well balanced and incredibly easy to handle.

The interior has had a major refit including a new galley and chart desk, largely re-painted and a reconfiguration of the forepeak to give more useable space.

Inside the counter (an often forgotten area) has been stripped out, re-painted, new wooden slats fitted and new stainless steel fuel tank and pipe work.

Most systems and electrics have all been upgraded and replaced in recent years. The deck has also been re-caulked with cotton, re-payed with Sikaflex and re-fastened with larger bronze screws.

In recent years every inch of the boat has been looked at and repaired or replaced if necessary.

A list of the work done over the last 6 to 8 years is available.
