Wooden Ships Comments Salcombe yawl No. Y48, built by Edgar Cove of Salcombe in 1966. Bought by the late owner in 2015 who started a thorough refit, sadly left unfinished after he passed away. The deck and transom were replaced, some new oak ribs fitted and the hull varnished inside and out with 2 pack Awlgrip varnish. The rig is nearly complete with masts and very good sails, but requires booms for mizzen and main and new rigging. The boat is sitting on a good launching trolley but does not have a road trailer. The Salcombe Yawl fleet is still very active in Salcombe with boats from all eras racing on a regular basis. This boat does not have a measurement certificate but could be brought into class for racing if required. She could also make a fun and capable dinghy for family sailing. The boat is being sold by the late owners family who wish to find a good home hence the very attractive price. Work left to do includes: New antifoul Fix new thwarts in the cockpit and on the side decks Clean up centreboard Fit rudder New running and standing rigging New main and mizzen booms Construction Clinker planked in mahogany, copper fastened to steam bent oak timbers. Many oak timbers replaced either entirely or in part. Iron centreplate which needs cleaning up and re-painting. Bronze winch to raise the plate. New varnished mahogany transom New marine plywood deck laid using Tiger Elite plywood with mahogany rubbing strakes. Deck, caomings and rubbing strakes all new. Deck beams repaired as necessary. New varnished mahogany thwarts made but not fitted. Rig Bermudan yawl rig on keel stepped wooden masts. Both main mast and mizzen are with the boat and have been stripped and re-varnished. No booms for main or mizzen. Standing rigging and running rigging not complete and will both need replacing. Original bowsprit stripped and re-varnished. Set of little used sails from another Salcombe Yawl, made by North Sails.
