History of the yacht as provided by the current owner:
Maresca was designed by the renowned British marine architect David Allan-Williams. His Blue Water Cruising yacht designs are called Dawn Class Yachts. As far as we know Maresca is the only Dawn Class 50 constructed in steel. She became the third Maresca owned by Captain Clarke, there are pictures of his earlier yachts, namely Maresca I & Maresca II, both of which were taken by the famous marine photographers Beken of Cowes. Both are displayed in the saloon onboard the current Maresca III.
Maresca III was designed as a Blue Water Cruiser to undertake a circumnavigation but unfortunately Captain Clarke died suddenly and so he only managed about three seasons sailing when he circumnavigated the U.K. and the seas around the Baltic.
Maresca, our timeline of adventures from 1994 to 2022
1994
We bought Maresca in October 1994 from the estate of the late Captain Clarke where she was on the hard in a Hamble boat yard. We fell in love with her and bought her immediately without a sea trial or survey!
When bought her she had a steel deck; we immediately had a teak deck fitted at The Maritime Workshop in Gosport. This is a charitable trust and undertakes works on historic ships such as The Victory: March 1995 we sailed her to our home port of Fleetwood in Lancashire. Later that summer we sailed to Largs in Scotland. Over the next four years we cruised the entire west coast of Scotland rounding Cape Wrath twice. During this period we changed the hull to Blue and renamed her Maresca III of Fleetwood.
1999
In June 1999 we began our trip to the Mediterranean which due to work commitments took us a couple of years. We had a great time and trouble free voyages via Padstow, the Scilly Isles, Northern Spain, Figera De Fos in Portugal, Benalmadena, Majorca, Minorca before entering Greek waters in Corfu. After transiting the Corinth Canal we spent a couple of seasons in Olympic Marina near Lavrion.
2004
After leaving Lavrion we headed into the Eastern Aegean and arrived in our current home port of Leros in September 2004 where Maresca has been berthed and maintained ever since by Moor & Dock SA (Previously Agmar Marine).
2022
We have recently bought land in Blefouti Bay on Leros on which we are currently building a house. Due to this, and advancing years we’ve very very reluctantly decided it’s time to sell Maresca and whilst not actually ‘swallowing the anchor’ we are planning to drastically downsize, probably to a small motor launch of some description yet to be decided!
Notes from the owner on condition and maintenance history:
Throughout the 28 years we've owned Maresca we've been committed to maintaining her in as near-perfect condition as is practically possible within sensible bounds.
Where maintenance ends and upgrading begin is hard to say, but as an example, the electronics ie. navigation equipment is on the third set since we bought her!
As an engineer by trade I can fix most things while aboard, but since we arrived on Leros our boatyard has taken over all maintenance of Maresca. We’ve completed major works such as stripping the hull back to the bare hull, re-plating, new engines etc.
Over the years we've made many improvements, small and large, to ensure she’s a comfortable traveling home for us. We've spent at least five months aboard for several years and have traversed most of the Greek Seas without any major technical problems.
The overriding maintenance decision with a steel-hulled yacht is to know what’s important and needs attention rather than small areas of surface rust and staining which are part and parcel of sailing a steel yacht. Taking this sensible approach during our ownership has served us well and ensured Maresca is in the excellent overall condition she's in today..
At the request of our insurers, a survey was carried out in December 2021 and no significant issues were reported. Importantly it was noted that the hull thicknesses are good in all areas.
The forward cabin provides two single berths, the aft master cabin features a double berth and the portside cabin provides two bunks. There is also a pilot berth located on the starboard side.
Each berth benefits from a mattress custom-made in the UK and shipped out to Greece. They are handmade, fully sprung, 200mm deep and very comfortable with the upper layer being TENCEL fabric
Beneath every mattress there are curved wooden slats mounted in rubber spacers to provide extra comfort and ventilation.
Every bed has a custom-made fitted quilted topper for additional comfort plus two sets of fitted sheets made from high-quality cotton.
There are two bathrooms located forward and aft, both feature head sink and shower facilities.
The toilets are electric Jabsco. These are very reliable and macerate waste before being discharged. Flushing is controlled via a simple on/off manual valve.
The aft toilet can be set to discharge directly to the sea or into a holding tank.
Top loading fridge/freezer
Stainless steel sink with single lever faucet
Taylors Marine Oven and Hob
Plentiful storage cupboards
The pilot house features and seating area and navigation station with desk and chair.
Duplicated Raymarine hybrid touch chart plotter, Windspeed & Autopilot instruments plus Raymarine VHF with AIS & Distress functions are located at the navigation station
The entire standing rigging was replaced in winter 2022 at a cost of £15,000 including a full mast inspection.
Maresca carries two sails; a fully battened main c/w lazy-jack cover & genoa with powered reefing.
Both sails are very heavy duty and are original but in good condition for their age.
The main has been reduced by shortening it by the first reef to enable easier short handed handling.
2 x 35 Barient 24vdc 2 speed primary winches & 2 x 32 Barient 2 speed manual winches.
24vdc motors for the primary winches with recently fitted reversing relays.
OSCULATI switches operate the primary winches.
The main engine is a Perkins Sabre M92B from 2015 fitted to a ZF 45A gearbox with a reduction ration of 2.03 coupled to the prop shaft via an Ultraflex coupling; all with a current run time of 1,151.5 hours (November 2022).
The engine and gearbox are serviced annually; both are in good condition.
A new 30mm SS propeller shaft, cutlass bearing and Tides Marine stern gland were fitted in 2020.
There is a spare stern gland seal pre-installed on the prop shaft and an additional spare seal and fitting tool in the spares pack.
The Morse control cables between the engine & gearbox and Jeffa pedestal are new and there is a spare cable in the spares pack.
The engine has a 100A Lucas alternator which delivers 24vdc to the service batteries and the power (start) batteries for the main engine, bow thruster and windlass. There is a new spare alternator in the spares pack.
The packaged generator is a Fischer Panda PMS AGT 6000 marine generator 12-72V - 210A / 5,5kW.
It has run for 450 hours and is serviced annually.
It supplies 24vdc power to the service batteries and the power (start) batteries for the main engine, bow thruster and windlass.
240VAC is delivered to UK type outlet sockets throughout the boat.
When disconnected from shore power 240VAC is provided by one of two inverters.
The main electrical distribution panel is in the Pilot House was recently upgraded and incorporates:
Raymarine hybrid touch chart plotter, Windspeed & Autopilot instruments
Duplicated Raymarine hybrid touch chart plotter, Windspeed & Autopilot instruments plus Raymarine VHF with AIS & Distress functions.
Stern mast c/w Raydome, 7 axis positional sensor, AIS antenna & 2 x GPS antennas
Raymarine ACU-200 Autopilot Actuator Control Unit
This Dawn Class 50 is fitted with a Vetus Bow Thruster.
The Vetus 250mm handles the boats weight and windage in most conditions.
There are 2 x 12vdc batteries for the bow thruster sited under the lower bunk berth in the port side cabin.
Bow thruster is operated by a unit located on the steering pedestal
Spacious cockpit offering plenty of seating
Folding cockpit table easily slots into retaining fixings
Ice maker
Gas bottle storage under rear seating
The Bimini incorporates mesh sides & rear screens to provide sun screening and privacy
The Jeffa steering pedestal houses the hydraulic pump and Raymarine electronics, control switches for the bow thruster, roller reefing, anchor windlass, rode counter & Lewmar 90cm folding wheel.
Maresca has an Eberspacher D9 diesel warm air heating system.
She also has a DST Consorb 24vdc DC-10 dehumidifier system. The system is set on Auto but can be switched to manual if required.
The owner installed this several years ago but for obvious reasons, it’s not much used in Greek waters!
Moist air is expelled via a grill in the cockpit next to the gas bottle storage locker.
The current owners fitted the first teak deck in October 1994 in Gosport as soon as they bought her. This was replaced in Leros in 2007 as part of a complete refit, mainly due to a fault in the way the original teak deck was fitted.
The current deck has been trouble free but was re-caulked in 2021.
The Lewmar hatches were all replaced when the second teak deck was fitted in Leros. All are in sound condition. New seals were recently fitted to the forward hatch and in the master cabin.
24vdc Lewmar 3000 is a combined Gypsy & Windlass to handle both 10mm chain and warps. There are foot control switches on the foredeck.
45Kg CQR main anchor
Chain locker beneath the starboard bunk in the forward cabin holds 75m of 10mm SS chain
The day tank holds 150 litres and has an electrical fuel gauge and visual level indicator.
The main tank holds 350 litres and has an electrical fuel gauge.
The rear tank holds 250 litres; the fuel level can be ‘dipped’ via the filling point which is in the centre of the cockpit.
Maresca's steel hull is a faired, carvel design ie. not chined; most observers believe it's a GRP hull.
Whilst a hull of steel construction can have downsides provided it is maintained correctly and in a timely manner they provide a robust and reliable build material that can be readily maintained/repaired.
The owners believe that there are no areas of concern and the recent survey shows the hull thicknesses to be sound in all areas.
The protruding rubbing strake is edged in SS and over the years has prevented paintwork scrapes on many occasions
