DESCRIPTION

IKRA is living proof of the 12-Metre as the most sustainable and versatile of Americas Cup classes. She has enjoyed many lives and fame in different theatres: as a state-of-the-art racer that very nearly became - perhaps should have been - the Cup challenger against CONSTELLATION at Newport in 1964; as a successful cruiser/racer through the years when thats what 12-Metres did and did very well; and as one of the two yachts that started - as a gentlemens challenge - that most ethereal of regatta movements, La Nioulargue, now Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez. Great care has been taken in current ownership to honour IKRAs legacy with the ability to play all her roles to the best: a removable interior and alternate rigs that allow participation as a 'Straight' Twelve in the increasingly active International Twelve Metre Class events worldwide; participation in the Classic Division at the Mediterraneans vibrant CIM classic regattas; and a custom, cut down cruising rig for true short-handed family cruising. Its said of many large classics that they can be short-handed, but IKRA really can, and is. IKRA is particularly well placed to participate in some major up coming Mediterranean 12-Metre/ America's Cup events, including the 2023 European Championship, pencilled-in for Cannes in September, the 2024 World Championship in the south of France, and the America's Cup 12-Metre Regatta at Barcelona in October 2024. She is also classed in France as 'Bateau dintrt patrimonial'. We usually hesitate to use the word iconic, but IKRA truly is.
IKRA has enjoyed a state-of-the-art refit and regular professional maintenance regime in current ownership since 2005. 2020 - Gooseneck reinforced 2017 - Mast refitAT CHANTIER TREHARD, ANTIBES - New interior, removable for racingAT CHANTIER TREHARD, ANTIBES SUPERVISED BY JACQUES & NICOLAS FAUROUX - Major refit of hull - Stainless steel mast ring frames - Stainless steel hanging knees - New plywood/ teak laid deck - New mast and rigging 1975 BY CHANTIER RAYMOND LABBE. DAVID BOYD/ ALEX. ROBERTSON & SONS YARD NO. 319 Apart of course from a lot of loving care by few owners over almost 60 years, a large part of IKRAs longevity is due to the quality of her original build - to Lloyds 'R' Scantling Rules as all 12-Metres must be - by Alexander Robertson & Sons of Sandbank, Scotland; a Firth of Clyde boatyard that in every sense emulated and carried forward the standards of craftsmanship set for a century and a half by Fife of Fairlie. An associated factor was a major construction departure from the 1958 build of the Boyd/ Robertson 12-Metre SCEPTRE - and all earlier UK International Rule yachts of 10-Metre and larger: the use of alternate laminated oak frames, instead of the steel angle frames that in UK builds usually introduced a mix of metals. "She's a beautiful vessel, beautifully constructed: the joiner work on deck and below is as fine as I have ever seen in a craft intended solely for racing." So wrote one of the most respected yachtsmen and yachting authors of his time, Carleton Mitchell, (in Sports Illustrated, 2 April 1958) about SCEPTRE. There is no reason to believe that KURREWA V (as IKRA was named at launch in April 1964), and her almost identical 1963 sister, SOVEREIGN (the 1964 America's Cup Challenger), were built with any less skill and care by the superb Robertson artisans. It was the only way they knew; cross-Firth craftsmanship peer pressure kept it that way. Moreover, their leader and the designer, David Boyd, had learned the yachting side of naval architecture under the close tutelage of William Fife Junior ("III") at Boyd's hometown yard, William Fife & Son, Fairlie; the disciplined craftsmanship there was famously second to none. Boyd brought this culture with him to Sandbank in 1929 when he became Robertsons' in-house designer, having worked with Fife on some of the internationally most successful metre-yachts of the 1920s. In his own right, Boyd had unquestionably been the best scoring British metric classes designer of the pre and post World War Two period, and, like Fife, he could control the quality of build in-house. KURREWA V came into being in a desire for a modern - equal chance of being selected as Cup challenger - training partner for SOVEREIGN, designed by Boyd for Anthony Boydens Royal Thames Yacht Club syndicate and launched by Robertsons in 1963. Various options by other designers and builders were researched, but there was no time to see them through. The momentum in 12-Metre research, design and construction ability was clearly at Robertsons - and David Boyd had been one of the last non-American designers allowed to use the crucial Davidson Laboratory test tank facility at Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey. Australian sheep farming yachtsmen brothers Frank and John Livingston funded KURREWA Vs hull construction to the tune of c. 45,000 and she was built during the winter of 1963-64; almost a copy of SOVEREIGN but with a slightly different keel profile and ballasting. Amid the skirl of bagpipes skilfully played by John Livingston, KURREWA Vs Yeoman green hull was launched into the Holy Loch at Sandbank on Saturday 11th April 1964 by The Hon. Catherine Macdonald-Buchanan, wife of SCEPTRE syndicate member Sir Reginald Macdonald-Buchanan. The Macdonald-Buchanan fortune was made in whisky: perhaps it wasnt champagne in the bottle New York Times correspondent Hugh Slim Somerville reported: The after-launching party will long be remembered by the natives of this quiet Scottish village. While festivities ensued, KURREWA V was quietly prepared for towing up the River Clyde to Glasgow and craning to a truck bound for Camper & Nicholsons, Gosport, where her mast would be stepped. The Livingston brothers contribution was over; an Owen Aisher-led syndicate would hereafter fund the masting, fit-out and campaign hence her hull colour. After a very close fought series of challenger selection matches on the Solent, at Weymouth, and completed off Newport , Rhode Island, SOVEREIGN was selected as 1964 Challenger and KURREWA V immediately offered for sale for $50,000. The eventual buyer of both KURREWA V and SOVEREIGN was Frenchman Roger LaForest, brother-in-law of ballpoint pen magnate Baron Marcel Bich. Both boats were shipped to Hyres (KURREWA V renamed LEVRIER DES MERS - Greyhound of the Seas) and later joined by CONSTELLATION - all part of Bichs unprecedented 1970 Americas Cup campaign by the Andr Mauric-designed FRANCE. As trials ensued, it became obvious that, given equal sails and gear, and well helmed and crewed, LEVRIER DES MERS and SOVEREIGN could beat CONSTELLATION. This was music to David Boyds ears and proof that his carefully conceived and tank-tested, beautifully built design had been let down in the 1964 Americas Cup match by inferior sails, gear, helmsmanship and decision making. In autumn 1969, to better replicate Newport conditions on the Bay of Quiberon, LEVRIER DES MERS and her Association Franaise Pour la Coupe de l'America stablemates CHANCEGGER, FRANCE and SOVEREIGN were trucked to a new base at La Trinit-sur-Mer. After the dust had settled on Baron Bichs first Americas Cup Challenge, LEVRIER DES MERS was purchased by Automobiles Alpine founder Jean Rdl and renamed IKRA. In 1975 she went through her first major refit and cruiser-racer conversion at the Saint-Malo yard of Raymond Labb, with naval architecture by Dominique Presles. IKRAs famous September 1981 match against American Dick Jaysons Swan 44 PRIDE on a course from Saint-Tropez, around La Nioulargue shoal to a finish off Patrice de Colmonts Club 55 on Pampelone Beach, is the stuff of legend still celebrated each year by Challenge Day, firstly at La Nioularge regatta, now Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez. It wasnt just the start of that fabulous annual Saint-Tropez celebration of sailing, but also part of a movement from the early 1980s in the Mediterranean to celebrate classic yachts that has never stopped growing. IKRA has a sure place in that story that has been maintained under current ownership since 2005. A major 2007 refit at Chantier Trehard, Antibes (now Monaco Marine), supervised by metre boat specialist naval architects Jacques & Nicolas Fauroux, gave IKRA renewed youth, set her up for the that years 12-Metre European Championship at Cannes - which sadly wasnt completed because of calm conditions (with IKRA leading her class) - and the racing/ cruising alternate configurations that keep her so usable and versatile: in recent years combining family cruising with winning two Rolex Trophies at Saint-Tropez, including regular racing against her oldest adversary and sister, SOVEREIGN. 2023 Iain McAllister/ Sandeman Yacht Company Ltd.
