‘Britannia’ is a well known cruising light hovercraft that has been adapted over a number of years to provide a leisure craft capable of operation in the Bristol Channel with its extensive mudflats and unpredictable sea conditions.
She is the culmination of many years hovering experience and has given many happy hours of operation
with modifications designed to provide a robust and safe craft that is easy to launch and recover.
She has been used in the Bristol Channel, the Solent and on the Rivers Severn & Avon as well as providing demonstrations to schools and at shows.
She is the first hovercraft to pass under the Clifton Suspension Bridge and has participated in several rescues of kayakers and people who have ventured out onto mudflats and been trapped by the tide.
She has a commercially built BBV3 hull with uprated industrial 4 stroke engines supplied by the manufacturer that provide ample lift and thrust together with economy. She has been retro fitted with a large amount of additional buoyancy, twin bilge pumps and lift air intakes specially designed to deflect waves from entering the fan system. The engines are fully marinised and engine air intakes are protected from water ingress.
BBV craft are chosen by many of the rescue and emergency services as they are very strongly built and designed to take knocks and bumps in service. Britannia has a heavy duty hull with aluminium runners and a segmented skirt system rather than a bag type. This is absolutely essential for safe operation in areas where there are obstructions
and rocks that can rip open a single bag and disable a craft – if you hit an obstruction with a segment skirt you tear segments and the ones on either side swell to seal the gap with minimal loss of lift. When the opportunity arises, the damaged skirt segment can be swapped out in a couple of minutes for a spare. Damaged skirt segments
can be repaired at leisure and reused !

B&S 35 bhp thrust engine with stainless steel performance exhaust system. New in 2009 now at 90 hours. Separate thrust frame with toothed belt reduction drive. Stainless steel lower pulley. 4 blade fan. Key start.
B&S 13 bhp lift engine with stainless steel performance exhaust. New in 2012 now at 45 hours. Push button start.
Bonnet fitted with gas struts for easy opening. Aux. generator can be switched in for boost charging if required.
