The owner of SAFARI is a ship carpenter who has meticulously restored, upgraded, and maintained her for the past 40 years. She is in very good condition, and the owners are now looking for the right new home for her.
Most summers, she has been cruising the coast of Maine. Each fall, the boat is completely emptied, thoroughly cleaned, inspected, and projects and upgrades undertaken. In 2015, SAFARI was relaunched after an extensive multi-year restoration project. The interior was completely removed and refinished. The restoration included new floors, rudder, and mast step ring frames, which are a structural improvement to the original design. Refitting included installing many new components: Yanmar 38 hp diesel engine, fuel tank, holding tank, main skylight, electronics, sails, roller furling, standing rigging, lifelines, and more. Previous projects included plywood and dynel deck and coach roof, monel keel bolts, replaced lower cockpit mahogany and cabin house front and back mahogany, replaced lower planking, 6 bronze self-tailing winches, and strip and refinishing all wooden spars. A more detailed list and survey can be made available upon request to the broker.
SAFARI is currently receiving her seasonal maintenance. All exterior bright work and spars have a fresh coat of varnish, the hull is getting painted, and she will be ready to launch for the new owner to enjoy the 2025 summer aboard SAFARI.
Designed in 1938 by renowned naval architect C. Raymond Hunt, the Concordia Yawl is arguably the most successful large one-design wooden boat in history. Comfortable, sea-kindly, and fast in all conditions, the well-proven Concordia Yawl has become something of a legend.
AccommodationsThe Concordias are known for their simple elegance (above and below decks). Finished with raised panel varnished pine bulkheads and doors and varnished locust trim, teak sole, 2 large opening hatches, the one in the main cabin being the beautifully detailed "butterfly" type, four opening ports, and six fixed ports. Hatches and forward opening ports are equipped with screens. On cooler or damp days, there is a shipmate kerosene heater that keeps the cabin comfortable and dries out damp clothing. Starting forward is the forepeak with room for anchor chain, spare anchor, sail storage, and 2 Concordia pipe berths. Next, aft to starboard is a generous hanging locker. Across to port is the head, which is plumbed directly to the holding tank. Holding tank has a Y-valve for deck or overboard discharge via manual waste pump. Head has a stainless steel sink with a foot pump for fresh water. Continuing aft is the Main Cabin with settees P&S with blue corduroy cushions and the comfortable Concordia fold down berths with storage shelves and lockers above. There is a centerline varnished locust drop leaf table with four drawers for storage. Next aft is the Galley split P&S around the companionway and engine box. To starboard is a 2 burner gimballed alcohol stove with storage behind and below, while to port is the sink and icebox with storage behind and below. During the 2015 restoration, the entire interior (including bulkheads and ceiling) was removed, refinished, and reinstalled. In the process, the interior has been rewired, upgraded to LED lighting, and the icebox was rebuilt with 2 in. foam insulation.
Masthead rigged yawl with keel stepped sitka spruce main mast. Deck stepped sitka spruce mizzen mast. Roller furling headstay. All spars are maintained with 2 annual coats of varnish. Standing rigging was replaced in 2016. New lifelines installed with starboard side gate in 2022.
All new electronics were installed in the 2015 rebuild.
Yanmar diesel, fresh water cooled, installed 2015 with a three-bladed prop on 1 in. stainless shaft.

Trunk cabin sides, combings, deck hatches, companionway hatch, and cockpit locker sides are solid mahogany with brightwork in excellent condition. The toerails and handrails are black locust. The backbone - keel, deadwood, stem, horn timber, and sternpost are all made of white oak, and the rudder is of solid mahogany. Topsides are painted white with a blue boot top and cove. 2024 Survey:
“This boat has had consistent care and upkeep over the current ownership for several decades including a bottom refastening in 1985 and a major structural refit period from including the entire removal of the interior accommodations down to the frames. The rudder, ballast keel, deadwood, and engine were removed for repair of the floors, frames, and planks. Planks 6-13 were replaced (garboard and planks 1-5 were replaced in an earlier refit and were reinstalled). Floors 7-30 were replaced, and the 6 floors below the mast step timber were replaced/incorporated with new laminated ring frames. The forward 3 feet of the keel was replaced, and 2 feet was scarfed onto the back of the keel timber. The main chainplates and backing blocks were removed, refurbished, and reinstalled. The original intermediate laminated frames at the hard turn of bilge were replaced with new longer laminated frames. Installed a new laminated oak outer stern post, and the oak deadwood was replaced. All backbone keel bolts and floor fasteners were replaced with Monel. The boat was completely rewired to ABYC Standards w/Bass Products distribution panel. All new LED interior lights and new electronics were installed. In 2014, the boat went to Concordia Co. for a new Yanmar engine, shaft, shaft log, cutlass bearing, PSS dripless shaft seal, 3-blade bronze prop, new bronze thruhulls for intake and exhaust, new fuel tank, holding tank, and new mahogany cabin skylight”
2015 Survey:
“The vessel has been inspected several times over the rebuild of the boat. The undersigned visited the boat several years ago when the ballast keel was dropped and at that time was able to inspect the keel timber. Also at that time the interior had been removed from the boat allowing the inspection of the frames. That started a long process of rebuilding this vessel. All along the best materials have been used. The new keel bolts and floor timber bolts were Monel. Also at that time the outer stern post was replaced and the inner stern post refurbished. The lower stem cheek pieces were replaced along with the cheek pieces on the horn timber. The forward 3 feet of the keel was replaced, and 2 feet was scarfed onto the back of the keel timber. All the bolts in the back bone are now Monel. In doing this work, 8 bottom planks were replaced new. It should be noted that in 1985 the bottom was refastened. The floor timbers were replaced from floor 730 aft to floor . Six of these floors in the area of the mast stop were replaced with "ring" frames. This is a combination of a laminated ring frame going from one side of the boat to the other side and sandwiched between two sections of the floor timber. This helps the boat in the area of stress between the mast step and the chain plates. All the through hulls with the exception of the head discharge have been replaced. The deck was redone and covered with Dynel. The coach roof was covered with Dynel. In this recent overhaul, the fuel tank was replaced with a 22 gal aluminum tank, and a custom Concordia holding tank was installed. As part of the overhaul, a new Yanmar 38 hp diesel was installed. As can be seen from the report, SAFARI has been meticulously restored to the fine craft she once was. The restoration went beyond just rebuilding in kind but took into consideration known issues in the class and corrected them. The new floor to frame design in the area of the mast step will greatly strengthen the hull in this area. All the new laminated sister frames will also strengthen the hull. With the new engine, new wiring, and all the new systems, this is now one of the best Concordia's around. Given all that has been done, there are presently no further recommendations, and this vessel would be considered a good marine risk."
