The whole character of a Cobia Boat is focused on a combination of fishing and comfort from the cleverly designed livewell systems to the open deck space, copious amounts of storage, and even the shape of the hull, which minimizes roll and provides a sturdy platform from which to fish. It’s perhaps no surprise then that they’re a top choice for tournament-level anglers. Yet they’re comfortable for families and non-fishing guests, too, and the newer models have plenty of modern conveniences making them fun cruisers.
Cobia has been making boats for over 60 years, and this focus on comfortable, high-performance fishing has never waned. The company started out in 1959 in Orlando, Florida, before moving to Sandford.
Despite the changes over the years, the Cobia personality has never been lost, and during the past two decades Maverick has honed that to create a range of higher performance boats that are some of the best-sellers in the United States. Maverick describes their appeal as “family-friendly functionality and tournament-grade performance.”
Throughout the decades there have been many models and ranges of Cobia Boats. Inevitably, many are no longer made, as innovation surges forward and the market demands something different. Yet the essential character of Cobia Boats hasn’t changed all that much. Center console models have always been in its line-up, and it’s possible to find long-discontinued models such as the 214CC and 194CC from the pre-Maverick era on the used market.
While the majority of used models for sale today are since Maverick acquired Cobia, there are still some out there from pre-2005. By 2000, for example, Cobia had a line-up of 17 different models ranging from 17 to 28 feet. They included ranges of Center Console, Walk Around, and Coastal Deck. Models from the early 2000s also included Dual Consoles, Bay Consoles and Sport Cabin ranges. The largest pre-Maverick Cobia Boat was the 314CC (31 feet) produced in 2003 and 2004.
Since 2005 the size of boats has gradually become larger, and Maverick stopped production on smaller models such as the 172CC and 180DC. In fact, since 2022 Cobia no longer produce models under 22 feet. Today Cobia has two ranges, the Center Console and the Dual Console series. There are currently seven models in the Center Console, ranging from 22 to 35 feet, with four in the Dual Console ranging from 22 to 33 feet.
At the top end of Cobia’s size range is the 350CC, a beefy sportfishing center console matched with a pair of Yamaha F425 XTO outboards that provide top speeds in excess of 60mph. With a wrap-around deck, tackle station with sink, insulated fish boxes, livewells, and rod holders galore, it’s set up for a successful day of big game fishing. But it’s family-friendly too, with sun lounges and a table, electric head, and plenty of home comforts.
One of Cobia’s most popular models is the 262CC, which packs a lot of standard features into a more compact and trailerable size and then offers an impressive list of optional extras from stereos and sun shades, to advanced angling features, and electronics.
Why are Cobia Boats popular?
Renowned for mastering the balance between comfort for the whole family, with safety, performance, and serious fishability, Cobia Boats have long been popular with keen offshore anglers. The brand offers well-priced boats, both new and used, and a long list of standard features and optional extras to help customize them for intended uses. Their versatility ranks highly, with everything from dive doors to sun loungers, allowing for additional uses other than fishing.
What are the best Cobia Boat models?
Cobia has made many boats over the years, lots of which are still available on the used market. Its 26-foot models have always been some of the biggest sellers, with the current 262CC one of their top models. Ultimately the best models are the ones that suit particular activities best, whether that’s a larger focus on fishing, or more space for family and friends.
