DESCRIPTION

Owens 40 - Classic 40ft American Cutter from the drawing boards of George Owens built 1948 in Baltimore, USA. Beautiful classic lines, Mahogany/Teak construction, long keel configuration she sails like a dream. Has been lovingly invested in and is yacht fitted out for living on and cruising in comfort. No expense spared. A real head turner. Huge investment in recent years, exhaustive, from tanks, electrics, upholstery, push and pull pits, modern instruments/nav gear. New teak deckshp Yanmar (2012) Bowthruster (2014) Sails (2011) Anderson winches (2011) Rig (2011) with carbon furling boom disguised so you would never know. No expense spared. A real head turner. Construction

Carvel Mahogany planking, ¼ inch diagonal.
Diagonal bronze strapping.
Traditional full long keel, lead keel.
Hung rudder.
Tiller steering.
2011 New teak deck swept to mahogany kingplank and laid over original painted plywood deck.
Separate anchor locker with access from deck formed forward of cabin
Bulwarks refashioned with improved toecap
Transom remodelled to improve appearance.
The hull was repainted to the original Marineware spec in spring 2016.
Original polycarbonate skylights replaced by traditional design in mahogany with bronze fittings.
Forward and lazarette hatches replaced with flush hatches by Olcessa Ricci
All sailing displays and controls resited behind removable mahogany panels.
Hull Anode wiring replaced and external earthing point installed for a hanging anode for use in marinas.

Machinery

2012 new Yanmar 3YM30 29hp diesel engine #17204, all filters, exhaust, water hoses etc renewed.
(last service May 2017)

Rig And Sails

Cutter Rigged – S/S standing rigging replaced 2011. All standing and running rigging replaced with new.
Wooden Mast by Collars, Taller rig and sailplan designed by Ed Burnett and consultation with North Sails.
All halyards and sheets are either dyneema or classic coloured braid depending on function.
Carbon In-Boom furling boom by Furlerboom, Denmark. With wooden veneer finish.
A new wooden boom in original style with bronze fittings was constructed in 2011 for use at classic regattas, together with Mainsail (2009), in storage.
LED lighting on mast includes tricolour and anchor, foredeck and steaming light, 2no Spreader lights, and 6no uplights 2no on coachroof and 4no on spreaders.

Owners Comments

Major work carried out in. Since then there has been a continuing programme of renewal and improvement.

Nearly all the varnish to the hull was stripped to bare wood in July 2014 and AWL wood MA applied which is still as new after 2 seasons in the Med. The mast was treated with Awlwood MA this spring 2016.

The hull was repainted to the original Marineware spec in spring 2016.
