Boat Overview

The One Design 35 is a hybrid vessel that combines sport boat design features with offshore-oriented characteristics of IMS boats, making it suitable for offshore and overnight racing. The accommodations are minimal yet very usable. This class was conceived by a group of Midwestern sailors who collaborated with Nelson/Marek, Doug DeVos, and Barry Carroll to bring this boat to life.

The hull measures 10 feet, 9 inches in width, just under the legal trailerable limit. With the keel attached, the boat can be trailered by a light truck and launched using a 4-ton dry-sail hoist. The weight of the boat is approximately 6,000 pounds, resulting in a D/L of 94.4. The stern is broader than typical IMS types. The design features a slight rocker through the middle and a distinct kick to the rocker around station 8. The near-plumb stem and minimal overhang aft give this boat the same DWL as a Valiant 40 but at a quarter of the weight.

The keel and rudder are high-aspect-ratio fins. The rudder appears large, which enhances handling and tracking. Those accustomed to full keels and skegs may find sailing this boat to be an eye-opening experience. A kelp cutter may be necessary on the leading edge to keep it free of weeds.

The rig is a big fractional with a 100-percent jib and a 23-degree sweep on the spreaders. Spinnakers are flown from a point midway between the hounds and the masthead. The long boom allows the mainsheet traveler to be positioned aft of the rudder head. The SA/D is a significant 32.65. There is no standing backstay.
