This Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter was built at the same yard and in the same year as the large Olga. As one of the smallest in the Pilot cutter fleet, she remains seaworthy while being easier to handle and sail with a small crew. She has been sailed extensively around Arctic waters in her current ownership, with adventures in Greenland and Svalbard. A recent professional refit includes a new mast, numerous deck planks, frames, wiring, and other jobs.
She features 7 berths, including a large double, and offers good headroom throughout. Powered by a Beta diesel engine, she has a great rig and plenty of gear. She is ready to sail away on the next Tillman-inspired adventure.
Built in 1909 by Bowdens of Porthleven as a Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter, she is one of the smaller boats in the fleet but no less seaworthy than her bigger sisters. Launched from the same yard in the same year as Olga, she has a well-documented history with many long-distance adventures. In her current long ownership, she has sailed numerous times to northern Norway, Svalbard, and Greenland, proving herself in incredibly rough weather.
She underwent a thorough survey in 2017 after sustaining damage to her mast, resulting in a new mast fitted in 2018 along with extensive work to the hull and decks. She is now ready for another long-distance adventure, with her experienced owner having absolute confidence in her condition and capability at sea.
A smaller Pilot Cutter like this is attractive due to its ease of handling compared to larger boats. The smaller rig means less weight and power to control, requiring a smaller crew for safe sailing. Her interior accommodates up to 6 berths with good headroom and ample storage for supplies and equipment on long passages.
A pedigree pilot cutter with a rich history, she is in good sound condition and ready to sail. A 2017 survey is available along with a list of recent work carried out.
Planked in Larch, fastened with galvanised dumps to heavy grown and sawn oak frames. Grown oak floors across the centreline. External Iron ballast keel fastened with galvanised steel and wrought iron bolts, with some internal lead ballast, totaling approximately 5 tons. The deck is straight laid solid Douglas Fir, caulked and payed in the traditional manner, with much of it professionally renewed in 2018. The bulwark is all around on stanchions mounted through the coverboard.
The small coachroof features varnished mahogany coamings and bronze portholes. The large cockpit is deep and safe, with thwarts on either side providing access to deep lockers. Tiller steering with a transom hung rudder offers practicality for offshore voyages.
Gaff cutter rig on a keel stepped varnished spruce pole mast, new in 2018. Varnished wooden bowsprit, gaff yard, and roller reefing boom with a large Appledore roller mechanism. Galvanised wire standing rigging was new in 2014, parcelled and served with dead eyes and lanyards to external galvanised chain plates. The forestay was new in 2016. All halyards and sheets are on tackles, making for a well-planned rig improved over many long voyages. The mainsail, staysail, and 2 jibs were made from Clipper Canvas in 2014 by Patrick Selman, while the topsail and large staysail are from 2000.
Beta Marine 43hp 4cyl diesel installed new in 2003. It features a hydraulic gearbox with single lever controls to a centreline 4-blade bronze propeller, achieving a cruising speed of 5 knots at 1 gallon/hour. The engine underwent an overhaul in 2018, with all electrics replaced, including the control panel and loom, and the gearbox rebuilt by the manufacturer. The vessel has 1 engine start battery and 2 x 100ah domestic batteries, all charged from the engine alternator. Fuel capacity includes a 180-litre tank plus a 30-litre day tank, and she holds 20 gallons of fresh water. There is 1 manual bilge pump and 2 electric bilge pumps.
She offers 6/7 berths, including a large double with over 6' headroom in the saloon. Steps lead down to a galley on the starboard side and a chart desk on the port side, with a large quarter berth to port. The galley is equipped with a new 2-burner gas stove, double stainless sink, and large work surface. The cosy saloon features nice panelled joinery, settee berths on either side, and a central saloon table. Heating is provided by a diesel-fired cabin heater and a hot air heating system from the engine. The forward cabin includes a large double to starboard with storage beneath and a single berth to port with a pipe cot above. The heads are located in the forepeak with a manual sea toilet that discharges directly overboard, along with ample storage space in the forepeak.
