The Beneteau 473 is a remarkable all-around cruising yacht. It features a robust build, a spacious and comfortable interior, a draft of 5' 7", and an ICW-friendly air draft of +/- 63'. Comparable boats in the 44' to 50' range are hard to find for under $200,000.
Phantom has had two owners who have maintained it meticulously. The current owner acquired Phantom in 2020 in South Carolina and moved it to Michigan after painting the hull a light khaki color. It has been sailed seasonally in fresh water and stored on the hard each winter, with the cockpit shrink-wrapped and the mast unstepped. The mast was inspected and cleaned each spring before relaunching.
Phantom has undergone several recent upgrades:
The spacious interior includes a large salon with an open galley, three heads, three cabins, and a navigation station. The bright and comfortable space features attractive cherry joinery and blue upholstery. There are fixed windows, opening ports, and opening hatches throughout.
The large forward Owner's Cabin features a double island berth and a seat to port, with ample storage including two shelves along the hull, one drawer under the berth, a large hanging locker, and shelving with slotted doors to port and starboard.
The Forward Head is located on the starboard side and is accessible from the owner's cabin. It includes a separate shower with folding doors, a Raritan Marine Elegance fresh-water electric flush toilet (2012), a 30-gallon holding tank, a mirror-fronted cabinet, one opening hatch, and a cabinet under the sink.
The Salon features a U-shaped seating area to starboard with an expandable salon table mounted on aluminum legs with extensions. The seating area and table convert to a double berth, with storage available under the seating and outboard.
The functional Galley is located on the port side of the vessel, featuring a stainless steel 4-burner propane stove with oven, a large counter, double stainless steel sink, Dometic/Grunert top opening freezer and front opening refrigerator (2014), hot/cold water, separate filtered drinking water, draining rack, and two 230 V outlets. Dishes, cookware, kitchen utensils, and flatware convey with the boat.
The Nav Area is located aft of the salon on the starboard side, equipped with a chart table, seat, and space for electronics (chart plotter/radar and VHF).
There are two symmetrical Aft Cabins, each with:
Finally, there are two Aft Heads, each with:
The sloop rig features an anodized aluminum mast and boom with a furling genoa and full batten mainsail. All sheets and furling lines are led back to the cockpit for ease of use.
The large aft cockpit features twin helms, a swim platform, and a double-leaf table.
The deck of the Beneteau 473 is designed for safe navigation with wide side decks, recessed hatches, double lifelines, and handrails. Key features include:
The single-skinned hull is of GRP construction, reinforced at various points (keel, rudder, chain plates, deck line, etc.). A structural single-skinned inner molding is bonded and laminated to the hull, absorbing stresses at pressure points and spreading loads to reduce strain on the hull. The deck comprises sandwich (fiberglass/balsa) construction for optimal strength/weight ratio and excellent thermal and sound insulation. A ‘diamond point’ non-slip surface enhances safety on deck.
The hull/deck joint is secured by a bonded and screwed teak bulwark, ensuring a watertight joint and added safety. The cast iron keel is attached by screws and a stainless steel backing plate, treated with anti-corrosion measures before assembly.
Single Rudder with glass composite stock.
