The owners, both lifelong sailors, spent 4 to 5 months a year on board with their family, and wanted a dependable vessel/home. She traveled up and down the east coast and over to the Bahamas under their ownership, and previously went much further south, always providing safe passage for her owners.
They’ve had her for 25 years, and she is a valuable family member, so upgrading her and keeping her in good shape was a top priority.

Now.....this is HUGE! The teak decks were removed and replaced with closed cell core!!!!
Valerie Arden's cockpit is comfortable, but not too huge. A true blue water boat needs to maintain the ability to shake off any waves that enter the cockpit, and this cockpit is designed for safety.....but she's comfortable, too.
Valerie Arden is powered by her original Yanmar 4JH2E. A naturally aspirated work horse of a good old engine. She has had extensive maintenance over the years, and has had her oil and filters changed religiously every 100 hours. It has been reliable, and the owners feel the asking price reflects the possible, eventual replacement, although she shows no sign of stopping any time soon!
What I like about the Baba 40:
The interior teak joinery gleaming but low maintenance. I use Murphy’s Oil cleaner and finish with Liquid Gold for a soft sheen.
The extensive storage space — behind settees, under settees, above settees, under the nav, under the starboard open cubbies, aft cabin chest of drawers along with cabin shelf and two lockers, the forward cabin’s sliding and hinged cupboards. There were even a few discreet hiding spots which we did not discover until we had moved aboard.
The galley — very comfortable work space combined with the Baba’s extensive storage makes time aboard fun for cooking. Although the original 1982 Force 10 range is down to two of its three burners and has just a moderate oven for braising at approx. 330F, I pair electric accessories with the boat’s heavy-duty inverter — my fun is not bridled! I added an electric pie maker, a stovetop pressure cooker and an electric skillet to my personal arsenal, and had plenty to write about in Facebook’s “Cooking On A Boat!”
Plus I added a Duxtop induction single burner to the galley so pasta water gets boiling very fast. The boat will be sold with its induction compatible cookware as well as a lidded deep cast-iron skillet (amazing for steaks and chicken on either induction or the propane range).
If I had a wish for my galley, it would be for refrigerator drawers that pulled out from a counter. However, my Seafrost refrigeration system holds my freezer needs for our 4-month trips in the Bahamas; I do have to use small stacking crates and prioritize usage to keep on top of inventory. But my frozen food is reliable and abundant, so I guess I am actually very fortunate.
As someone who did not grow up on racing sailboats, I have always felt the motion of the Baba 40 to be so friendly. The boat is not an extreme heeler — 18 degrees or so is the norm for us — and my skipper eases sail at lunch time to 15 degrees of heel so I can easily serve to the cockpit. As “Admiral”, I expect the Baba to sail at a respectable pace (yes, we have outsailed a couple of Valiant 40s and some other deep blue cruisers) but as chef, I like feeling secure in my galley underway. And, mealtime over, lying on the spinnaker bag on the foredeck is bliss.
