The ideal boat for your next SoCal sailing adventure!

Pura Vida’s owner reluctantly parts with this true sailor’s Cal 34. Designed and build just a few dozen miles form where Pura Vida is berthed in Marina del Rey, Cal 34s are the ideal SoCal sailboat, whether for a day sail with friends on Santa Monica Bay or an overnight or week-long trip to Catalina or beyond. Stoutly built of thick hand-laid fiberglass, Cal 34s are known to make ocean crossings, and with apprx. 40% ballast/displacement ratio, they are stiff and controllable in wind gusts.

The Cal 34’s naval architect, Bill Lapworth – whose signature graces Pura Vida’s forepeak!– designed these boats as excellent light air performers yet able to handle California’s strong offshore westerly breezes. Pura Vida’s owner frequently attained 6 knots of boat speed on just 10 knots of wind on the way to Catalina, yet often did not reef the main until sustained winds hit apprx. 18 knots. Pura Vida delighted her surfer-owner with many lively beam-reach trips back from the island, her flat bottom, fin keel and spade rudder making her a controllable yet thrilling wave rider.

Pura Vida is set up for the single-hander. Her masthead rig with its 120% jib and fully battened main are so well balanced that wing-and-wing downwind runs are no problem. The high-quality Ullman sails are in very good condition, the jib is self-furling, and stowable lazy jacks make dropping the mainsail a cinch, yet can be tucked away when sailing. When Pura Vida’s current owner replaced the standing rigging, he installed oversize upper shrouds, ensuring safety and solid performance. The mainsail is sheeted aft, with cam cleat and oversize traveler from a Cal 40, ideal for the single-hander. Pura Vida’s 30 hp Atomic 4 gas engine is clean, quiet, extremely reliable and fuel efficient (≤ 1 gal/hr), and it has the power to push the boat through ocean conditions. The keel is molded to the boat – not bolted on – meaning almost zero leaks and little work for the bilge pump.

The Cal 34’s long cockpit makes a fine place to socialize at the dock, enjoy the company of friends or family while out on the water, or sleep outside at the island. A canvas cockpit cover keeps nighttime dew out of the cockpit for those who choose to sleep above deck. Down below is a unique wood-panel ceiling liner, a clean, well-kept galley with large ice box, handsome teak lockers and bulkheads, and a spacious dinette. The galley table drops down to make a double berth. With the dinette berth, V-berth and two quarter berths, Pura Vida can sleep 6.

Pura Vida has been well loved by her few owners. Her current owner, on a sailing trip at Catalina, met the couple who owned her from 1975-1995. And only one owner had her between then and when her current owner purchased her 10 years ago. Cal 34s are ideal boats for Southern California sailing, and Pura Vida is a special Cal 34, turnkey ready to give you years of sailing joy.
