DESCRIPTION

Panther was bought in November 2013 by a Poole Yachtsman.
The design and construction method used identified the boat as an early 30's example of a Gentleman's Runabout and these details also pointed it towards being a British Power Boat company design.
This boat is very similar to a Riva, Hacker, Garwood or an early Chris Craft.
A Brand New PRG Monza trailer enclosed with winch, LED Lighting, Dehumidifier, heater and battery charger is included with the boat
Well worth a viewing, lying in Poole.

History

Panther was found in a chicken shed in Farnham with no electrics or engine. The boat had been purchased some 18 months earlier as a 'Project' from the well known boat builders on the Thames, Peter Freebody and Company. Peter Freebody had bought the boat some 30 years earlier as a British Power Boat company 22' runabout. Even then it was considered a 'Project' which he never got round to starting.

The boat was taken to CServe, a well known, Poole based, boat builders who are experienced in both wood and modern technology construction methods. The ply bottom was removed as the first step in a total refurbishment program. This exposed the keel and internal stringers and enabled a full understanding of the original construction method.

The decision was taken to utilise the original method of double planking. The inner skin was diagonal planking throughout. The topsides were copied as horizontal planking but below the water like the inner skin was covered with a glass epoxy sheething, where it would have had Calico, and longitudinal planking, instead of a second diagonal skin, to speed up the build. One other departure from the original construction technique was that all joints were epoxy glued and no fastenings were used.

Additional Information

The owner believes the original boat builder to have been the British Power Boat Company of Hythe, Southampton. They are best known for their WWII High speed craft, motor gun boats, motor torpedo boats and RAF High speed rescue launches. These were all built at factories in Hythe and Poole as well as factories in America and Canada. PT109, President Kennedy's Motor Gun Boat was built by the American Offshoot of the British Power boat company.

Hubert Scott - Paine was the owner of The British Power Boat Company and Fred Cooper was the designer in the early 30s.

Hubert Scott-Paine was best known as one of the founders of the Supermarine Aircraft Company, who designed and built the Schneider Trophy winning aircraft, which was the precursor to the Spitfire. The British Power Boat Company, and their designer, designed and built the Miss England record breaking Power Boats at their yard in Hythe. Fred Cooper went on to design the early Bluebird record breaking power boats for Sir Malcolm Campbell.

The boat has a traditional look, push button stereo radio by Retrosound with 6 speakers and a Garmin GPS with depth sounder.

The boat has a sophisticated shore power charging system with 240V mains circuit and dual engine and domestic battery installation.

There are 3 fully automatic fire extinguishers installed, one over each fuel tank and and one in the engine bay.

It has a brand new Iva-Lite remote control spotlight from the USA, built to the original 1936 design.
