Storing Your Boat

An important part of owning a boat is the question of where to keep it when you aren't using it. Your budget, the convenience of getting out on the water or to your favourite cruising grounds quickly, and availability are all aspects that should be considered when making this decision.

Trailering

The most inexpensive way to store your boat is to keep it on a trailer in your driveway or garden whilst it is not in use and in the winter months.  A trailer allows easy transportation to different areas of water as well as safe, secure and cost effective storage on land. Before you look into purchasing a trailer, make sure your car has the required towing capacity for your boat and any additional equipment.

Rack storage

For smaller boats, a great alternative is rack storage, or dry stacks.  Some rack storage facilities will keep your boat in a covered building which will protect it against the elements.  When you want to use your boat, simply call the facility and they will retrieve it for you. Once you’re finished boating, bring it back, tie it up, and they will return it to the storage area for you.

If you’re a boat owner looking for convenience, a marina slip is just what you need.  Simply drive your family to the marina, get in the boat, and go.  Rates will vary between different marinas depending on the area and facilities offered, although most will provide you several other perks as well as the slip itself as well as security. Some charge separately for electricity, waste and water, whilst others will include these costs in the standard fees.

Buying Your Slip

In some areas, you can buy a permanent slip at a marina.  This can be great to have in high demand areas, as it guarantees you a slip at the marina whenever you need to store your boat.  The purchased slip is a long term asset, and will be available to you for as long as you own a boat.
