Elan£56,450 BE QUICK! This is a particularly nice and well equipped boat!
This is a very good example of this extremely popular 'Cruiser Racer' from the pen of world renowned designer Rob Humphrey and built by Elan Yachts of Slovenia. This is a yacht which can perform in a racing environment yet is fitted out to a high standard and that offers comfortable cruising attributes as well. Possibly one of the best all round yachts of this size available on the market today - and we don't say that lightly!
How often does one find a boat - still with a whiff of its original manufacturer, as if delivered just three years ago - that has been properly set up for single-handed racing and shorthanded cruising by a 'husband and wife' team - and comes complete with a set of competitive racing sails too? This is a keel-stepped boat that is dry and fresh below, with nothing but dust in her bilge. It is clear that she has always been a dry boat and the soft furnishings and condition of the internal woodwork reflect that fact.
Sadly, after the passing of her sole owner from new, 'Aquilon' is now to be sold by the owner's widow and comes as a very complete package that could be taken for a two week cruise by a new owner tomorrow. We, at the Barbican Yacht Agency, would be green with envy!
This being one of the later examples of the class, the internal woodwork is of a pleasant honey-coloured wood veneered plywood, with good quality detailing such as the closed locker vents and smoothly finished fiddles about the interior.
The Elan 333 offers up to six berths in two separate cabins, plus the use of the saloon, where the settee berths are of simple straight design with good width and very good length. A single heads compartment is located to starboard of the companionway down from the cockpit, with a dedicated and forward-facing chart table ahead of them. The galley is of L-shaped layout, located to port of the area at the foot of the companionway.
A CD/radio, with stereo speakers to either side of the main saloon is fitted by way of entertainment facilities.
ForwardCabin:Providing a traditional, shallow 'Vee'd' berth, the berth lengths are surprisingly good, with relatively good shoulder width enabled by the fuller forward sections of the 333's hull shape. An infilling cushion is provided, but there is still open floor space beneath and behind the berth when fully made up. Two half-height hanging lockers and two shelved closed lockers face each other across the centreline, to either side of the access door.
Main Saloon: U-shaped seating is fitted to the port side of the main cabin, with a straight settee berth to starboard, facing each other over a well proportioned leaved table with drinks stowage within. The two stainless steel water tanks are fitted amidships beneath the aft end of the saloon seating but generous lockers are to be found under the forward ends. These combine with behind seat back lockers and open shelves to each side to offer significant stowage. A centreline hatch over the table, plus opening portlights above galley and chart table ensure good light values and cross-ventilation in harbour.
Galley: Consciously located to port side, so that the yacht may be hove to on starboard tack while making a hot brew, the galley is of efficient design and bigger than on some 34 and 35' alternatives. A top-opening cool box outboard of the stainless steel sinks is refrigerated by an Isotherm unit, The two-burner cooker with oven does not have a grill. Crockery and staples stowage is in the large lockers beneath the side deck and the cutlery & crockery seen in the pictures goes with the boat..
Aft Cabin:Located to port side, abaft the galley, the aft cabin's berth is more generous than might be expected; running around, behind the engine space and over the centreline, while retaining a good length throughout. There is also a reasonably generous floor area behind the closed door on which to stand and get dressed with the door closed, with a wider than average storage unit outboard of this space. The locker features a half-height hanging space accessed through the upper doors, with a shallower, closed but shelved locker inboard.
Heads Compartment: This is a light and welcoming compartment - even featuring 'his and her' hand basins one might think! In fact, one is intended as secure stowage for washbags etc. for practical use when underway. Beyond the marine flushing toilet, the hanging space for wet 'oilies' is of good size.
This Elan 33 is fitted with a Volvo Penta MD2020 diesel with a smoother running sail drive transmission unit than the original Yanmar installation with conventional shaft drive. A two-bladed folding propeller is fitted.
In common with the rest of the boat, the engine has been maintained religiously, but has not been serviced this year due to the lack of use, however the sump oil was changed in 2021 and is currently golden in colour.
Electrical
The 'domestic and Services' bank of batteries comprises of 2 off 100 A/hr lead acid batteries, fitted in Aug 2019, while a Varta 60 A/hr capacity battery is fitted for engine cranking. Charging is by means of the engine-driven alternator and a 220-240V AC battery charger for use when connected to shore support.
Two shore support cables are carried, one of long length and large gauge, plus [presumably] the original, lower spec cable. There are two short 'converting cables; one with a continental plug, the other with UK 13 Amp plug to be able to connect the shore support cable to a domestic socket in either country.
Lighting on board is by conventional filament bulbs or halogen lamps.
This Elan 333 is fitted with the laterkeel-stepped, narrower profiled mast by Selden that was offered as an option to those who wanted the best possible control of sail shape and thereby the best possible performance.
The vendor's son-in-law is a director of one of the professional rigging companies, based in Plymouth and has sailed on this boat frequently - one can be assured that this particular rig has been maintained to very high standards and nicely finished!
The spinnaker pole is of Carbon Fibre for convenience in use - whether racing or sailing shorthanded. The main boom is fitted with single-line reefing systems. A Furlex 200S is fitted to the for'stay. The boat is fully and nicely set up with full spinnaker controls. An aluminium jockey pole for the spinnaker guy is stowed in the cockpit's starboard locker and the boom is fitted with a rod kicker.

General note on safety equipment:Any safety equipment such as Liferafts, EPIRBS, fire extinguishers and flares etc. are usually personal to the current owner(s) and if being left on-board as part of the sale of a used vessel may require routine servicing, replacement, or changing to meet a new owners specific needs.
Designed by top international yacht designer Rob Humphreys, the Elan 333 succeeds in combining modern technology and expertise with a respect for tradition, elegance, and stylish good looks. The deck layout reflects the many years of designing, building, and sailing experience that were put together to conceive the Elan 333. The clean deck features the very best deck hardware available, while the ergonomically designed cockpit guarantees comfort for both the crew and the skipper. The helmsman's seat cants forward to create easy boarding through an open transom as well as a raised platform for easier visibility. The spatial geometry of the boat creates an efficient interrelationship between an ergonomically refined cockpit configuration and a wonderfully usable interior. The Elan 333 delivers much more than can normally be expected of a sub-10 metre yacht. In some owners eyes, the 333 is the perfect club-racer; in others she is the ideal cruising boat. That both notions can coexist speaks volumes for the overall qualities of this boat.
