Myfanwy is an out-and-out racing yacht, built in 1897 by Samuel Bond at Rockferry on the Mersey. She was commissioned as a one-off design by Alexander Richardson for a Doctor who lived on Angelesy. Alexander Richardson was a well renowned designer of classic gaff rigged wooden racing yachts at the turn of the 20th century.
She was discovered in 2010 in a North Pembrokeshire Barn in a poor state of repair by current owner, Robbie Mason. It took him 4 years of dedication to restore her to original pristine condition. Every inch of the boat from aft to stern has been lovingly repaired and replaced. The frames are oak, the ribs are Canadian elm, the planking is silver spruce, the overhanging counter has been carved out of a solid iroko block.
Now fully restored Robbie has been sailing and putting her through her paces. She easily reaches 9.5 knots under sail and cruises at 6.5 knots with just the head sail.
She and her crew were visitors to the Volvo Dun Laoghaire Bicentennial Regatta in July 2017 and were the inaugural winners of the Kingston200 Trophy for Classic Boats and the ‘100 Guinea Purse'.
So, as in her glory days at the turn of the century, Myfanwy is now fully restored and ready to race anywhere, potentially ideal for the classic boat racing scene in the Mediterranean.
