DESCRIPTION

Rowing boat for sale. This is a Lightweight Double Sculling Gig, built in 1928 by Denham Brothers of Sandown on the Isle of Wight. This Sculling Gig also has a custom-made De Graff fully galvanised road trailer included in the sale but it requires some attention as listed in the main information.

About The Craft

Lightweight Double Sculling Gig, the 'You & I', Length 5.03M (16 feet 6 in.) Beam 1.1M (3ft 9 in) is for sale.

This is a lightweight double sculling gig built in 1928 by Denham Brothers of Sandown on the Isle of Wight.

She has a rich history and was fully restored to 'as new' condition in 2001. The work included 5 new planking strakes stem-to-stern and a further two half planks spliced in together with a small section of garboard. Some eight new timbers or ribs were steamed in and much of the nail and rove fastening was all replaced.

Two original timbers remain, the balance having obviously been the subject of some restoration work in the 1960s. Seven new grown oak knees were fitted to the thwarts, and a section of the port bow gunwale was spliced and replaced due to a fracture. Otherwise the fabric is well-mellowed original.

A photographic record of the work and all invoices bills and costs associated with the restoration accompany of 'You and I' are part of her history file. She was sold by Bonhams (see photo) in their Traditional Craft & Maritime sale in 2004.

'You & I' has been featured twice in Water Craft Magazine. Clinker spruce, copper fastened on oak timbers, varnished inside & out to the waterline with DEKS OLJE and painted below. Bow sculling thwart with original bronze swivel rowlocks, adjustable stretcher, stroke sculling thwart with bronze swivel rowlocks, cox seat with original painted backboard, rudder with yoke and tiller lines, three pine floorboards.

The sale includes a pot bailer with a teak handle turned by Neil Firth of Hartlepool from original hull planking salvaged from HMS Trincomalee (launched 1817 and surviving),  two rope fenders and a fitted white canvas cover.

There are three pairs of sculls, an original pair at 3.35M (11 ft) with spoon blades from Eton Windsor Boathouse and three pairs at 2.44m(8ft) with straight blades.

The custom-made De Graff fully galvanised road trailer is included in the sale but the tyres need inflating (lack of use). The spare tyre is fully inflated. The trailer is being included free-of-charge and no warranties/guarantees are given in respect of it.

Additional Information

There is a custom made trailer included free-of-charge in the sale. The trailer has not been used and is included without any form of warranty. We are informed that the tyres need inflating and some general maintenance required.
