No ghost boats

What are ghost boats?

Ghost boats are an industry problem where a dealer will advertise a boat that they do not have for sale. This is often done for two reasons:

  • 1) They advertise a fictitious boat for sale at a too-good-to-be-true price. When a customer contacts them to buy the boat, they are told that boat has just sold, but they have another one that is a bit more expensive still available.
  • 2) They copy the details of a competitor's boat, but display a reduced price. When they get a customer enquire about the boat, they go to the dealer who actually has the boat for sale and either offers to 'sell' them the customer, or they will try to buy the boat at reduced rate and then 'flip' the boat for a quick margin.

Why are ghost boats bad?

From the publics point of view

  • It wastes the boat-buyers time making enquires to a dealer who does not have the boat for sale.

From the dealer's perspective

  • 'Bedroom brokers' damage the industry by under-cutting established dealers who have large overheads. The established dealers will not be able to afford the level of support to their customers that they deserve.
  • It gives an impression that there are more boats for sale then there actually are, giving the customer false information to negotiate with.

No sold boats

We remove boats within 24 hours that have been sold. We actively encourage private sellers to remove their boats as soon as they have sold them. This gives the boat buyer a clearer view of the market and saves them a lot of wasted time contacting the sellers of sold boats.

Multi-broker boats only listed once

If a boat is being sold by multiple dealers, we let the boat buyer know. This way they see an accurate view of the market and can save them time arranging to view the same boat multiple times.

European only

Rightboat.com is a European site. We ask our dealers to only display boats that are in continental Europe. This gives the boat-buyer a clearer view of the market. From experience we have seen some American dealers offering boats at a very good price, however the shipping costs make these boats, particularly at the lower end of the market, unviable.
