Conservation bids to protect our marine habitats
Fifteen coastal locations around the UK have been named as Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) in attempt to protect important marine habitats. The sites are set to become part of a European network of reefs, sea caves and sandbanks protected to maintain what has been identified as crucial to marine life by scientific studies.
It is yet to be discussed how the areas will be managed, and strategies to restrict any damaging activities. It will be the duty of the Marine Management Organisation to oversee the inshore sites and that of the Sea Fisheries Committees to monitor offshore.
