DescriptionSpirit of May is an extremely attractive and fast cruising yacht. Comprehensively equipped and in great condition, this Dufour 40 has two double cabins and a dedicated shower compartment. MCA coded for charter, her one owner from new, has only lightly chartered her. With no plans for another yacht, the owner is selling her with a huge inventory, from pilot books and charts to virtually unused spare sails.
Sail rig

Anodised aluminium mast with double swept back spreaders, rigged 9/10, keel stepped. Anchor and steaming lights. Boom topping lift cleat. Anodised aluminium boom equipped with single line reefing system. Rigid boom vang with tackle led back to cockpit. Genoa furler with removable drum. Discontinuous standing rigging in single strand stainless steel cable and bronze turn buckles including: forestay, backstay, cap shrouds, inter and lower shrouds. Backstay adjusted with stay tensioner. Symmetrical spinnaker gear with pole.
2 suits of white sails by Elvstrom and Kemp, latter almost unused are in a mylar composite cloth.
Storm jib by Sanders sails.
Spinnaker with snuffer by Kemp sails.
Mainsail and headsail covers.
Deck

Optional teak cockpit floor and teak side decks. Teak handrails on coach roof, wood toe rail on hull/deck joint.
Self draining chain locker with eye bolt and laminated windlass bracket, Quick 1000 W electric anchor windlass, chain locker cover with locking bolt. Single bow roller.
Pulpit in two parts with green/red navigation lights. Asymmetrical spinnaker tack ring ahead of forestay. 6 mooring cleats on backing plates, stainless steel rubbing plates on sheer line. Single chain plate for cap shrouds/aft lower shrouds including an eye for fixing lower control lines.
2 deck filler plates for water, 1 for fuel.
Mainsheet track on cockpit sole with adjustable traveller, genoa sheet tracks with piston lead blocks. 8 Spinlock clutches on coachroof. 2 Harken 44 selftailing halyard winches on coach roof. 2 Harken 48 selftailing genoa sheet winches on cockpit coamings close to helmsman. Clutch on toe rail for genoa furling line. Padeyes on side decks for spinnaker guy blocks.
Sliding companionway hatch and washboard in plexiglass with stops and lock. Sprayhood with handrail. Outboard engine bracket on starboard pushpit. Life Line gates. Upgraded halyard winches. Cockpit table.
Cruiser accommodation

Slightly unusually for a yacht of this size “Spirit of May” is a two cabin layout with a generous sleeping cabin forward and another aft on the port side. The absence of a second aft cabin on the starboard side means that there is a dedicated shower compartment and a huge cockpit locker. Internal wood finish is thought to be teak and teak veneered marine ply. Teak and holly effect cabin sole.
From forward:
Conventional “V” double berth with seating and large locker to starboard. En suite heads/shower to port. Saloon features a large central table which can be converted to make a double berth on the port side. U shaped settee to port and bench settee to starboard.
Galley to aft port quarter of saloon.
Navigation area to starboard.
Day head and shower compartment also to starboard aft quarter of saloon.
Aft cabin to port.
Removable companionway steps giving access to engine.

Construction

Hand laminated GRP hull, vacuum bagged PVC foam core sandwich above the water line. NGP gelcoat with first layer of cloth impregnated with NGP resin forming an optimum barrier against osmosis. Inner moulded hull bottom, structural framing laminated to the hull. Navy blue decorative strips on hull and coach roof. Deck in PVC foam core sandwich, moulded by injection process (Resin Transfer Moulding) for significant weight saving and excellent interior finish. Semi-elliptical rudder, filled with closed cell epoxy foam. Stainless steel solid stock, on self aligning bearings. Deep lead keel, bolt loads taken up by stainless steel backing plate.       








Comment

If there is any value in the old adage that "if a yacht looks right then she is right" the Dufour 40 must be very good. Although Sprit of May has been lightly chartered she is in nice general condition and her inventory, ranging from virtually unused spare sails through to de-humidifiers, tools and pilot books is as comprehensive as any we have encountered. Lifted out of the water and professionally polished and valeted in October 2011.
