Owner's CommentsThe hull of Cold Feet was built by CMC Ltd of Bicester. I believe one of the couple of dozen Pape Steelmaid's they built. I do not know the date. She was designed by Alan Pape of Looe, in Cornwall. Alan was very helpful to me and approved all the minor mods I have suggested. I have copies of his drawings and calculations, which I will pass on to the vendor. She is 13.7M long and 2M draft. Plating varies from area to area but is either 6mm or 4mm Corten with frames of 50mm x 8mm at 500mm centres.

When I bought her, in 1992, she was on the hard in Blythe Docks, and I left her there while I built our home for three years.

In 1995 I moved her back to Oxfordshire and lifted her into my front garden.

Alan Pape is famous for his designs of long keeled hulls and sail rigs for blue water sailing, but not so for his interiors, So I asked Kirschstein Designs, my son, who is a superyacht interior designer and stylist for recommendations. They redesigned the deck layout to include a few curves to keep the spray out of the cockpit and enlarged the cockpit to provide full height passages below decks. The redesign also provided two bucket seats and a double bed, after dropping the table, in the saloon, a double bed in the stateroom aft and two bunks in the forepeak.

I employed Freeland Welding Ltd, who had previously done a lot of full strength welding for me when I was tunnelling, to brace the hull, remove the old midsection of the deck and replace with the new design.

I then had the interior cleaned, shotblasted and epoxy sprayed with particular attention to the sump and bilges areas

The next seven years were spent between sailing with the Ocean Youth Club and filling the inside of the hull with various lumps of metal like engines, an M90 from Perkins Sabre and an ONAN 6KW generator from Berthon, {no cooking by explosive gas} and Portlights from Trend and rotating tube steering gear from Whitlock and lots and lots of timber. This is mainly 10mm cherry veneered WBP ply edged with 50 x 15mm cherry edging. The frames of 50mm allowed me to insert 50mm thick fibreglass insulation from cabin roof down to below the waterline. The plastic faced boards are Raspetex, a quality shower board. Fabrics are from Marina Mills with the ceiling boards covered by Magilite

I transported her to Mylor where she was shotblasted externally and then hot zinc sprayed, {the next best thing to hot dip galvanising which is difficult to do with a 45ft boat!} This work being done by Blast.Clean and Coating Ltd of Penrynn, who finished with the umpteen layers specified for Jotun Epoxy paints

We launched Cold Feet for the first time in Mylor harbour in Jan 2002. The masts, booms, roller reefing and some rather oversize two speed winches etc were rigged by Mylor Rigging Ltd using Selden designs The electrics were installed by Mylor Chandlery Ltd. This was followed by installing the satnav system, with Radar overlay by Furuno, the auto pilot and instrument displays by Simrad and the bowthruster by Vetus.

I then sailed her to Gosport where she went on a swing mooring operated by Gosport Boat Yard, from where i sailed until the end of 2008.
MiscellaneousGosport Boat Yard in December 09 lifted her out and checked anodes and re antifouled Because of the zinc spray the antifouling used must be suitable for aluminium hulls. Hull anodes generally last many years, but there is a ring anode on the front of the Vetus bowthruster that corrodes in two years. [At least in Portsmouth Harbour]. There is a spare on board and I would recommend replacing before re floating her.
